Reading

Year 5 read the books Cogheart by Peter Bunzel and Holes by Louis Sachar. We practise retrieval, inference and exploring vocabulary, and explore how the authors develop characters and establish themes.

Writing

In the summer term, Year 5 write a narrative based on The Kid From Space by Ross Welford , a Journal inspired by a fictional journey to Mars and Poetry about The World's Most Dangerous Animals.

Maths

In the summer term year 5 cover a range of topics, including: shape, position and direction, decimals, negative numbers, converting units and volume.

Science

We look at Properties of Materials, where children explore how scientists describe and classify different materials by their properties, including electrical and thermal conductivity, and how we can separate different mixtures and solutions. Children conduct na range of investigations, including carefully observing the properties of materials, and taking measurements over time.

We then explore Human Reporuduction and Ageing where children explore the life-cycles of different animals, and compare them to that of humans. Children learn about the different stages and processes of life, including birth, adolescence, puberty and reproduction. We learn how to collect and represent date using a range of measurements, tables, graphs and diagrams.

 

History

Year 5 explore Ancient Greece, and look at chronological changes, and how the civilisation developed from the early Minoan and Mycenaean periods, through to the Classical and Hellenestic Era. They compare Greek civilisation with other periods they have studied, including the Ancient Egyptians, Romans and Indus Valley Civilisations. Children explore how Historians learn about the past, by looking at and asking questions about artefacts and primary sources.
